How Many Seedlings Fit Under a 4-Foot Grow Light?
A fixture’s length does not tell you how many seedlings it can support. You need the usable lit shelf dimensions and the footprint of the containers at their largest indoor stage.
Try your own numbers
4 container groups · 4 standard tray spaces
Check the whole seasonCount usable tray positions
Start with the part of the shelf you know has appropriate growing light. The planner does not estimate intensity, fixture power, or crop-specific light requirements. Enter the number of real tray positions within that usable area.
Calculate the largest stage
Four tray positions hold 288 cells when using 72-cell inserts, but only 48 pots if 12 larger pots fit each tray. Both numbers can be mathematically correct for the same shelf. Only the number for the relevant growth stage answers whether the season fits.
Leave space for overlapping batches
A shelf does not reset when you start another crop. Subtract room used by every active batch during the same dates. The timeline tracks each stage and the daily capacity view identifies the actual peak instead of relying on a single maximum plant-count estimate.
Worked example
A shelf with 4 usable standard tray spaces holds 4 × 12 = 48 pots at a 12-pots-per-tray configuration. A 10% buffer may push a desired final quantity of 48 beyond that capacity.
These calculations describe space and time, not guaranteed plant performance. Use your actual equipment and crop-specific growing guidance.
