How Many Seed Trays Do I Need?

The number of trays depends on usable cells, how many extra seedlings you start, and whether you keep each batch in its own tray. Count physical units, not just planted cells.

Try your own numbers

4 container groups · 4 standard tray spaces

Check the whole season

Round up each batch separately

For a single batch, divide seedlings started by usable cells per tray and round upward. If two varieties must remain on separate trays, calculate each independently. Shared starting trays can use spare cells across compatible batches. The planner shows the assigned seedlings and remaining spots in each physical tray. Choose separate trays when growing conditions or handling needs differ.

Include the buffer before rounding

A 10% buffer on 48 final plants means starting 53 seedlings after rounding up. One 50-cell tray is no longer enough. When the number is close to a container boundary, a small change in buffer can add an entire tray.

Count inserts and carrying trays differently

An insert describes cells. The carrying tray describes physical shelf space. Two half-tray inserts may fit one standard tray footprint. Enter a reusable profile with its usable cells and actual footprint so the app uses the configuration you own.

Worked example

For 48 final plants and a 10% buffer, start 53 seedlings. With 50 usable cells per standard tray, reserve 2 trays. With 72 usable cells, reserve 1.

These calculations describe space and time, not guaranteed plant performance. Use your actual equipment and crop-specific growing guidance.
